Examination Overview

The Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit statisticians for various governmental departments and agencies. This examination is designed for those with a strong background in statistics and related fields. Below is an overview of the syllabus and eligibility criteria for the ISS exam.

 Eligibility Criteria

1. Nationality: The candidate must be:

   - A citizen of India, or

   - A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or

   - A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

   - A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.


2. Age Limit: 

   - Minimum age: 21 years

   - Maximum age: 30 years as of August 1 of the exam year

   - Relaxation in upper age limit is provided for certain categories:

     - Up to 5 years for SC/ST candidates

     - Up to 3 years for OBC candidates

     - Other relaxations as per government rules


3. Educational Qualifications:

   - A candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics as one of the subjects.

   - Alternatively, a Master’s Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics is also acceptable.


 Examination Pattern

The ISS examination consists of two main stages: a written examination and a Viva Voce (interview).

1. Written Examination

The written exam comprises six papers, each requiring a deep understanding of various statistical concepts and methodologies. The detailed breakdown is as follows:

  - Focus: Writing skills, understanding, and usage of the English language.


- General Studies

  - Duration: 3 hours

  - Marks: 100

- General Studies : Current events, Indian polity, geography, history, economics, and general science.


Statistics Papers I-IV

Each of these papers delves into specific areas of statistics, requiring in-depth knowledge and the ability to solve complex problems. The exact topics covered include but are not limited to the following:


- Statistics Paper-I : Basic probability theory, distribution theory, estimation theory, and statistical methods.

- Statistics Paper-II : Theory of linear models, regression analysis, testing of hypotheses, and official statistics including data collection and processing.

- Statistics Paper-III : Sampling theory, econometrics, time series analysis, and advanced statistical methods for multivariate data.
